Diatonic 7-Tone
Are you looking for a way to seriously up your guitar game? To connect all the dots of the fretboard instead of just being stuck in a set of positions? To really understand how the guitar works in not just a linear sense, but also harmonically? To have no barriers when it comes to the instrument?
Originally engineered by legendary New Jersey bass player Gerald Carboy, and then enhanced and refined by former Berklee College of Music Professor Chris Buono, Diatonic 7-Tone is an exhaustive study of the 7 Diatonic Modes of the Major Scale: Ionian, Dorian, etc. The modes are sliced and diced in a variety of approaches that will allow you to get inside of each mode and understand what really makes it tick. Each mode is divided up into the following 6 sections:
Scale Fingerings
Intervals
Connected Intervals
135s
125s
145s
Chris wrote an article for Guitar Player magazine that gives you a glimpse into the interval section. You can check that out here:
The first part involves getting down a very specific set of scale fingerings. This ingenious set of fingerings is laid out so that you are always starting on the root, but ending on a successive scale degree. The fingerings must be played as written for everything to work out as it should. But getting the fingerings down is really just the beginning. Once you have those you’re ready to move on to the real work. But before you take the plunge, there’s a set of rules for 7-Tone that MUST be followed:
You must commit to meeting once a week.
You will play every last note and chord in the program. No shortcuts.
Every linear component will be played with consistent alternate picking.
Every chordal component will be played with hybrid picking.
Everything will be played to a metronome. Linear playing will be 16th notes.
You will play everything perfectly, as there is no allowance for errors.
You will finish what you start at every turn. NO EXCEPTIONS.
It is these rules, particularly the last two, that make 7-Tone as powerful as it is. The constant accountability and zero allowance for errors or shortcuts is what will force you to deal with any and all of your weak spots. This is no gimmicky “Learn the whole fretboard in 5 minutes'' or “Solo in any key with just one simple shape.” nonsense. This is real work and is not for the faint of heart. Be warned, it will take you at least a year and half to finish. It took me about 22 months. However, if you manage to climb this mountain, the view from the top will be well worth the journey. Simply put, Diatonic 7-Tone was simply the single most important learning system I’ve encountered on the guitar. I’m currently offering Diatonic 7 Tone as an online offering via Skype, however, if you are local to Lancaster, PA, and want to go for it in person, hit me up and we can work out the details.
Due to the length of time involved in completing 7-Tone, it is offered at slightly discounted rate compared to my normal private lessons. Hop on over to my pricing and policies section to check out the business side of things.
